ProtectKidsOnline.ca is here to help parents/guardians stay on top of the digital world their children are engaging in. Here you’ll find information about the ever-changing online interests of young people, the potential risks they face and proactive strategies to help keep your child/adolescent safe while online.

While the Internet can be an incredible social and educational tool, children’s online safety depends on parents/guardians taking a proactive approach to help protect their children from online sexual exploitation. As children grow and the Internet evolves, the activities children undertake online change as well. 

As it can be difficult to keep up with online developments, Cybertip.ca is committed to providing the public with current and age-appropriate information and resources to help educate Canadians about how to keep children safe while online. Cybertip.ca also operates as a clearinghouse or “front door” to the Canadian public for reporting offences related to the online sexual exploitation of children.

Simply put, sextortion is blackmail. It’s when someone threatens to send a sexual image or video of you to other people if you don’t pay them or provide more sexual content. 

Unfortunately, sextortion has been on the rise lately. But there are ways to prevent and fight it.

The goals of Kids in the Know are: To reduce child/youth victimization by teaching children effective personal safety strategies; To build resiliency skills (i.e. assertiveness, self-awareness, social-emotional competence, problem-solving, critical thinking, and low-risk choice making skills); To encourage children to report concerning experiences and behaviours; To provide messaging to those who have experienced abuse that they are not to blame; To enhance communication between parents and children about personal safety.
