Where can I find information about : Pregnancy Tests? Abortions? Plan B?

Where can I get a STBBI (Sexually transmitted & blood borne infections) test done?

– You may need a requisition for urine or blood test. This can be obtained at walk in clinic, or via family physician.

Where can I get treatment for a positive STBBI?

– Treatment for STIs can be completed through PNHC (apt or walk in), or Border City (appt or walk in clinic). Most family clinics may have treatment on hand.

Where can I go to access condoms?

– Free condoms can be accessed at the Prairie North Health Region Clinic or Harm Reduction both located in the Prairie North Health Plaza.

– Some schools also provide free condoms.

Where can I get information on consent and the legal age gap between people who are having sexual relations?

The Age of Consent in Canada is 16 years old. This means that a 16-year-old person may consent to sexual activity with anyone who is their age or older, with some exceptions.

Exceptions:

  • Children under age 12 cannot consent to sexual activity.
  • Children who are aged 12 and 13 may consent to sexual activity with someone no more than two years older.
  • 14 and 15-year-old adolescents may consent to sexual activity with someone no more than five years older.

Other Consent Related Issues:

  • A child or youth cannot consent to sexual activity with someone who is in a position of trust or authority over them (i.e.: teachers, bosses, or coaches). This applies for youth under the age of 18.
  • Consent is not given if it has been obtained using force, threats, lies, or misleading information (i.e.: auntie showing two nieces a pornographic magazine displaying two women engaging in sexual activity; explaining that this kind of behaviour is fun and normal to do between girls).
  • Consent is not given if the child or youth is incapacitated by drugs or alcohol.
  • Children and adults with physical or mental disabilities cannot consent to sexual activity with someone in a position of trust or authority over them or who they are dependent upon.
  • Individuals cannot claim that the age of the child or youth was not known at the time of the sexual activity. –
  • Individuals cannot claim their own intoxication from drugs or alcohol as a valid defense.

Where can I go if I have been sexually assaulted?

Emergency room – if the assault is recent go to the emergency room immediately to complete sexual assault kit, receive medical treatment, labs, file report with police.

As far as resources, the youth are always welcome to access resources and information from Loydminster Sexual Assault Services (306-825-8255). There are also other sexual assault centres in Alberta that could also provide information.
